Reflection

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r319/fiascostore/thanks.gif

Issues in Publication and Design course, the existence of this course throughout my degree, I’m pretty sure that I’ve learnt a lot. The knowledge that I gained from this course, it makes me realize so many things, from reading paths to construct a message towards appropriate audience, hence, the purpose and context of the text to imply on different type of genre.

Nevertheless, I’ve learnt a lot about blogging. Citation and referencing of other’s information is needed. Thus, I’ve realized the importance of plagiarising and copyrights of other’s work. The ‘after effect’ of plagiarising someone’s work could be serious.

As a blogger, we should always remind ourselves that different race would read the blogpost, hence, we should have beware of words or blogpost that would provoke others emotion and angst. Always remind yourself that different reader has different point of view and different cultural background.

Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to thank to my beloved lecturer, Ms.Jenny, you’re awesome and it’s fun to have you in this semester. Throughout the next 2 years of my degree life, I wish that I can still learn a lot from you. Thanks!

Will E-textbook affect the future journalism?

E-textbook, whats the first thing that pop-up in your mind? Convenient will be the first of all, nevertheless, it is cheaper, portable, environmental friendly as in we don't need waste any paper for producing books. Thus, the latest subject will be update on e-textbook constantly. Hence, there is always people who question, will e-book affect the print media in future journalism?

According to National Retail Federation (NRF), back-to-school spending on consumer electronics is expected to increase by 12 percent to almost $7.2 billion this year. With the number of increase that happened on tablets and e-readers, what will happen to all the publisher, as in printed text? There is also pros and cons in E-textbook, for an example, it is an impractical option for students who are used to highlighting and making notes in the margins ( Cassagnol, 2011)
In my personal point of view, e-textbooks are more convenient to reader, and of course it will definitely take over the print textbooks sooner or later. According to Cassagnol, she stated that the PC World articledo mention about the benefits of using e-textbooks, which included the lower cost, instant accessibility, ecological sense, and potential to transform interact with course materials. Hence, there is also downside of e-textbook, for example, it raised the problem of copyright both for producers and consumers. Lastly, the genre has changed due to the technology advancement, of course there is advantage and disadvantage of it. E-textbook brought us convenient, but remember don't abuse it.

In this technology advance era, technology and digital devices have made an impact to human's daily basis. Invention of Ipads, which has achieved a higher level of technology, brought countless of convenience to us. Ipads which has recently launch and supported different type of application. Recently, they came out with newspaper application. Hence, newspaper has came into a new revolution.

There are some of the newspaper apps with charging and some are free of charge. There is large number of people who used ipad newspaper application, but then, there is also reader that prefer the traditional type of newspaper. 'The world’s newspapers are about to lose their paper-clad clothing. There is palpable fear in the business — borne largely by thoughts of being killed off by technology, or left bare in a strange new world. Those of us long comfortable in the new media world understand that migrating from paper to electronic delivery is the easy part.' ( Butche, 2008). From traditional print media to digital media is a change and transformation of genre. Readers have different perception towards print modes than multimodal modes.

Newspaper apps in Ipad of course brought benefits to us, but it is also a sign that the end of traditional newspaper revolution. As Butche mentioned, some in the newspaper business sense that the end of physical newspaper is the equivalent of death. The olden time traditional newspaper is more depends on text and images, while the digital type of newspaper or either apple newspaper apps is more visualize compare to traditional type of newspaper.

According to research that found, the number of people who prefer to read news on internet increased and its taking over the number of people who actually read newspaper. Nevertheless, there is still people who prefer to read on newspaper as it's more reliable and it is way easier for people who is not able to reach media or digital device. 2011, 21st century with technology advancement has changed the society. News have changes from one genre to another, etc, online news to online videos is now running around on different media websites. Hence, we all knew that online news websites and online videos channel is from different form of modes. Walsh stated that, websites provided multimodal modes, for an example, text, images, visuals and hyperlinks. Thus, online videos provided audio, moving visuals and compare to text, it is more interesting way to convey a message to send out for audience.

There is benefit from online videos, in my personal opinion, videos are more visualize compare to text and of course, that’s the main point why audience choose video over text. Bowles(2011) stated that online videos create familiarity user interfere and acts as a one-stop resources than online website than require reads to click and choose their reading pathways. Hence, in daily life, If you ever a news reader, for instance, videos and text, which one would you click? Of course video, it is more interesting to share than text. According to Walsh (2006), he stated that multimodal texts are those texts which included more than one 'mode', hence, they incoporated with spoken or written language, moving images, produced on electronic device which involved with music and sound.

According to O'neil, he reported that 85% of online media websites are now using online video content to cover the news. It shows that how important are online videos towards everyone compare to online news that with text. Click here to read more about the survey of videos being more attractive and highly streamed by internet users nowadays, there is also video that make comparison between visual and text.

There is a few point that, why is video more beneficial compare to text

  1. Video attracts new, relevant search traffic
  2. Video is inherently interactive
  3. Video assets can be easily syndicated
  4. Video can give viewer an in-depth view

Lastly, online video is definitely a recommended tool as a preference; hence most people are attracted to watch video than read a text. A video can shows thousand words, hence, it is more convenient and undeniable, it is way more creative and interesting than text.

The beliefs, cultures and values of advertising in Malaysia

Do you still remember the advertisement on 8TV during Ramadan? It is an advertisement which pulled out the racist issue. Hence, there was an article written by Yow Hong Chieh which was published in The Malaysian Insider with the title of Media Prima pulls out racist Ramadan ads. In short, I would like to sum up, in this series of Ramadan commercial, it shows how a Chinese girl being rude and obnoxious, included eating in public and wearing revealing clothes during the fasting month. The message that this commercial tried to convey was to urge non-Muslims to respect Muslin in fasting month. Public judged this commercial as racist because it is unfair to Chinese; this commercial showed that Chinese does not respect other culture and trying to imply the negative side of others culture. Different individual might have different thought, opinion and perception towards this advertisement. To stand on a Muslim thought, they will feel its fine to have this advertisement and obviously they won’t feel offended of the commercial based on their understanding towards culture and beliefs. To stand on a non-Muslim perception, they might get offended as they dont understand the cultures and beliefs of other race and the message of the commercial trying to convey.

According to Schriver (1997), he stated that an individual values and beliefs is a part of how they interact and interpret words and visuals. Individual with different cultures and beliefs and so, they might interpret it differently. Hence, Malaysia is a multicultural and multiracial country, so there might be racism issue being carry on. Nevertheless, Walsh (2006) mentioned that to understand the social purpose of a text and cultural context might change the perception and interpret differently towards commercial like what Id mentioned above.

As living in Malaysia, a multicultural and multiracial country, we have to learn how to understand other races culture and also belief in order to achieve a peaceful society. According to Dr Fam, he stated that is important to realize that cultural sensitivity is not merely about understanding what causes offense, but it entails identifying and understanding local customs, traditions, values and consumer bahavious (Victoria University of Wellington, 2011). In my point of view, advertiser in Malaysia should observe and study the traditions, cultures and behaviors of each race which could provoke misunderstanding and misinterpretation by the public.

Screen vs. Print document design

Throughout the decade, publication has made a big changes or we can say that a tremendous changes that cause by the technology towards the publication. The purpose of screen documents and print documents are almost the same, sending information to the readers, yet in many way, they have their differences.

The differences between Screen and Print Document Design

DIMENSIONALITY

Print design- 2 dimensional, which much focused on the layout. Whereas, screen document is simultaneously 1 demensional and N-dimensional (Nielsen, 1999). Between 2 different type of document, print document and screen document have different type of outcome.

NAVIGATION

According to Nielsen(1999), the N-dimensional aspect of web design follows from the hypertext navigation that is the essence of the web. Whereas, in print document, navigation mainly consists of page turning: an ultra-simple user interface which is one of the printed medium's great benefits. In my opinion, this is one of the reason why screen document are mostly used in this century; and its more interesting for reader to read compare to print document.

RESPONSE TIME, RESOLUTION, AND CANVAS SIZE

According to Nielsen (1999), he stated that the speed of print is much faster, type and image quality, and the size of visible space than the Web. Nevertheless, technologies advancement has changed the speed of bandwidth as fast as to download a webpage as one can turn the page into newspaper. The screen document also allows reader to have sharper resolution's graphic.

Both web and print document design have their pros and cons. Everything has their pros and cons, and same to web and document design. In my personal opinion, i would like to say that web document is more attractive and interesting in visual wise; whereas, print document is easier for reader to read and it doesn't need internet to access, yet web document can always get the latest information.

New forms of media publishing

What is the new forms of media publishing?
According to the research I had done, NEW MEDIA is the media which is accessible on anytime, anywhere and just by one click, information can be access pretty easily. By using the new media, everyone can voice out their opinion, feelings, dreams through blogs, e-zines, online forum and also internet publications. 21st century stated as the century of advance technology, the transformation from so called "old" form of media to new media has changed the style of writing and publication. Through years and years, human has make a tremendous change on media through the implication of technologies into media. According to Naughton (2006), he stated that the explosive growth in blogging has prompted a predictable outburst of 'endism'- as in questions about whether the phenomenon marks the end of journalism.

Efficiency and Accuration

Compare to previous, new media deliver news faster and more accurate .According to the understanding towards the article that Naughton (2006), he mentioned that internet distribute the information a better knowledgeable on the subject and the undoubtedly efficiency. Thus, there is a lot issue been bringing out due to the freedom of speech, exposure of nudity and also some not descent and uncivil issue that been brought up. Some of the country, Singapore etc, government block most of the pornography which content uncivil and it goes against some religion and will also cause bad impact towards the country and society. Thus, Malaysian popular blogger Raja Petra has been arrested by the ISA due to what he voiced out and also might threatened the national security.

Types of blogging communities and methods to build blogging communities

What is the blogging community?

Blog communities that aggregate the individual and independent blogs of a number of people with a shared interest – the same cause, similar political views, business interest, etc (Kinkeldei, 2007). Nevertheless, it is also a platform for the blogger to increase their blog's traffic and followers. First of all, to create a blogging community, the blogger themselves have to create their own social network, for instance, it is easier for them to advertise their blog and increase the number of followers. For an example, blogging community can easily expand with RSS. From here, we can briefly know how to create a blogging community.

According to White (2006), there is 3 types of blogging community, which is the single blog centric community, the central connecting topic community and also the Boundaried community.

SINGLE BLOG CENTRIC COMMUNITY

-The first and most visible model of focus and spoke model of 'one blog/blogger.

-It only owned by one owner or an organisation.

-Might be more than 1 author, but it is not an aggregation of blogs

-A blog where readers will return and leave comments, not only that readers can get to know the blogger itself and also the other community of commentators. For an example, Xiaxue's blog

THE CENTRAL CONNECTING TOPIC COMMUNITY

-Instead of hub and spoke, the Central Connecting Centric blog community is a network formation where they reader share their common passion.

-They linked together and became a network.

-For an example, "Global Voices" is one of the central connecting topic community.

BOUNDARIED COMMUNITY

-gathered other's blog and readers hosted from a single site or platform.

-often this website function like social network, community can join the group and get the chance to create a blog.

-In this blogging community, they have discussion board, social networking features, wikis and instant messaging.

-For an example, "Edublogs" and "Myspace" is one of the best example.

CLASSIFICATION OF BLOGS AND OPINION ABOUT THE MOST APPROPRIATE CLASSIFICATION APPROACH

From the previous post, we talked about the current blogosphere and also the benefits towards the society. Nevertheless, the classification of blogs are also important. Each and every blog that written, they have their own genre and classification regarding on what their blogs bring to the public. The blogosphere phenomenon grow tremendously and it is getting harder to classify the types of blog as there is too many different types of blogger, the scope of writing is wider than how we can classify it. Thus, different person classify blog differently.

According to Belardo (2010), she classified blogs into 5 types:

  • Collaborative blog

  • Tutorial blog

  • Travel and cultural blog

  • Fashion and lifestyle blog

  • Personal blog

Among the 5 types of blog above, personal blog is the most common one. Everyone can have their own personal blog to write about their daily life or as a dairy. Meanwhile, Simons (2008) classified it into 9 types, which is:

  • Pampletheering blogs

  • Digest blogs

  • Advocacy blogs

  • Popular mechanics blogs

  • Exhibition blogs

  • Gatewatcher blogs

  • Diary

  • News blog

Throughout this 2 different people who classified the blog types differently, I would like to say that, Simon (2010) classifed it more in depth. Whereas, Belardo (2010) classified the types of blog in a very general way. In my opinion, I would like the way how Simon (2010) classified the genre and style of writing of each type of blog. Meanwhile, I found that Rowse (2010) classified it as details as how Simon (2010) did, but they have different opinion towards the genre and types of blog, so they came out with different type of blogs.

Blog as current phenomenon and benefits of blogging to the community

blog that we commonly read

In the advance technology era, blogging is very common towards internet user. Lately, it has became a trend towards the community and also towards internet users all around the world. Blog has become an integral part of online culture ( Chapman, 2011). Undeniable, out of 10 internet users, with a brief assumption, 8 of them do have the habit of reading blog. Here is some brief history of blogging, do click and visit. According to the most current phenomenon, from my research, i found that this article from Technorati, "blogosphere of 2010" has the most current phenomenon of blogging. By summarizing the article, i would like to focus on this 2 main subject that make an big impact towards the society. As the blogosphere converges with social media, sharing of blog posts is increasingly done through social networks( Sobel, 2010 ). From the statement that I quoted, it is clearly shown that the current blogosphere is getting wider and bigger than previous; as social network became part of everyone's life.

With the current blogosphere, in Malaysia, the trend of blog's that people read are more about daily lifestyle (entertainment, fashion, food, daily rant etc. ) and also politic blogs.

A few blog that written by Malaysian blogger

From the blog above, society can have alternative way to access the information from daily life to politics. If you read from the blog above, basically you will realized that they are actually shared their personal life or opinion towards the public. Nevertheless, in America, blogs are very common, but the most prevalent among all kind of blogs are political blogs. For example, http://www.americablog.com/, it brings a lot of benefits to the country and society, reveal the truth of politics in the country and also a place where people can express and voice out their opinion. Nevertheless, most of the youngster do intervene themselves in the cyber world, by writing political views, it can actually encourage more "Y" generation to involve themselves in politics.

Purpose of my blog

Nevertheless, blog plays an important role in the media and communication field. I would like to target a few group of people as my follower/reader, media and communication student who have the habit to follow blogs and also people who have the same interest as what the blogger blog about. In this advance technology era, I believe that, most of the people have internet at home, thus, the reader of blog will increase tremendously based on the common used of internet, throughout that, as a blogger, I am glad that internet became common and the information and message will be easier to send out towards the public.
